Photographing the Icelandic Volcanic Eruption
Witnessing the raw force of nature is an experience like no other, and few events showcase this power quite like a volcanic eruption. Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to photograph the volcanic eruption in Iceland. As soon as I realized that the volcano erupted I booked a ticket just to be able to witness it. Upon my arrival, the eruption site was closed and I started to feel the stress cause I knew I only had 3 days to try to capture it. Fortunately within a few hours it opened up and I made the long hike out to thee eruption site of Litli Hrutur.
The Unforgettable Encounter
From the moment I set foot on Icelandic soil, it was evident that I was about to embark on an extraordinary photographic journey. Witnessing a Volcanic eruption for the first time is definitely something that has been on my to-do list for so long so I am very happy I finally managed to do it. The sight of molten lava spewing forth from the depths of the earth against a backdrop of beautiful Icelandic nature was nothing short of mesmerizing. All elements out here created an otherworldly scene that begged to be captured.
Mastering the Art of Capturing Lava
Photographing a volcanic eruption requires careful planning and the right equipment. I mostly went for drone shots out here amidst the unpredictable environment. Using a wide-angle lens together with the 3 x Different vocal lengths provided with the DJI MAVIC 3 PRO CINE allowed me to encompass both the dynamic lava flow and the surrounding landscape. The timing was crucial, as the changing patterns of the lava provided numerous compositional opportunities as well as trying to time when it wasn’t so crowded in the air (Lots of drones and aircrafts flying over the crater at the same time so still a bit in shock nothing really happened to my drone)
Navigating the Technical Challenges & Telling the Story Through Your Lens
The extreme conditions posed some unique technical challenges. The intense heat required me to always be aware of where I was and try to not get as close to the actual lava. It’s actually harder than it sounds as you always want to get closer than you actually are. The drone helped me maintain a safe distance while capturing shots from the eruption site. Beyond the technical aspects, it's crucial to convey the emotional impact of the eruption through your photographs. I focused on capturing the juxtaposition of destructive power and natural beauty. The fiery intensity of the eruption was balanced by the serenity of the surrounding landscapes, emphasizing the delicate balance between creation and destruction.
